6 Tips for Traveling Smart with Neuropathic Pain

Taking a vacation is for more than just fun and leisure. It’s also a great way to relieve stress, enjoy new experiences and improve your mental and physical health. How are you supposed to manage your pain while you’re away? Will your pain stop you from having fun? Will it impact others who are traveling with you?

Nerve pain can be tough to live with, but it shouldn’t stop you from traveling. There are ways to manage your pain and maximize your enjoyment while on vacation. Below are six tips to help you prepare for successful travels.

1. Get Comfortable in Your Seat

First, determine how you plan to travel. Is it by car, train or plane? The goal is to make your seat as comfortable as possible. If you’re traveling by car, make sure your seat is upright and you have good posture. Some people benefit from sitting with a lumbar roll, rolled up towel or pillow to take pressure off their back. If you’re traveling by plane, choose a seat with more room so that you can switch positions.

2. Take Frequent Breaks

Plan to take frequent breaks no matter how you travel. Traveling by car gives you the most freedom. You can make frequent stops and get out of the car for fresh air and stretching. This is more difficult to do on an airplane, but it will get you to where you need to go faster. We recommend taking breaks every two hours or so.

3. Watch What You Eat and Drink

People tend to loosen their restrictions when they’re on vacation, but you want to avoid this. Caffeine, alcohol, fried foods, sugar, etc. are all inflammatory and can aggravate your nerve pain. Maintain a healthy diet while you travel so that you can maintain your body’s chemistry, better tolerate pain and prevent flare ups. Fortunately, more restaurants are offering healthy menus, so check in advance.

4. Research Your Accommodations

Plan ahead so that you can choose the best accommodations. For example, you may want to avoid hotels with extensive stairwells or no wheelchair accommodations. You may also prefer a hotel that’s in the heart of everything so that you don’t have to travel far. The goal is to have a convenient, accessible place to stay. This way, you can take breaks and maintain better health.

5. Don’t Overdo Your Activities

Many people say they need a vacation from their vacation! That’s because they spend their days rushing around, trying to do everything. However, being sleep deprived and stressed is not good for your nerve health. Plan lighter days that allow you to do the things you enjoy without feeling stressed. Follow the advice of your doctor or physical therapist.

6. Pack a Cream for Neuropathy

Bring along your medications and supplements so that you can maintain your regimen. Now is not the time to skip any medications. It works quickly and effectively, allowing you to sleep better and enjoy your vacation more!

These helpful tips will hopefully make your travels more comfortable.
