Can Neuropathy Be Reversed?

If you suffer from neuropathy, you’ve probably wondered many times if it can be cured. Neuropathy is a tricky thing because there’s an underlying cause that needs to be addressed. Depending on the underlying cause, you may or may not be able to reverse the damage.

For example, nerve damage from diabetes cannot be reversed because the body can’t naturally repair damaged nerve tissues. However, you can prevent further damage by managing your blood glucose levels, exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet.

Other types of neuropathy may go away on their own. If your nerve pain was caused by an infection, the pain may stop when the infection is treated. Or if there’s a tumor pressing on a nerve, removing the nerve will relieve the pain.

If Nerves Can Regenerate, Why is it Hard to Treat Nerve Pain?

Nerve cells are capable of regenerating and growing back at a rate of about one inch a month. With this in mind, it’s easy to assume that nerves grow back quickly. However, things don’t work quite this way.

Recovery from a nerve injury is typically slow and incomplete. The nervous system is fragile and it doesn’t heal easily. Without complete healing, a damaged nerve can struggle to communicate with your muscles and sensory organs, causing tingling, numbness and weakness.

Even though you may not be able to reverse nerve damage in the way that you thought, there are ways to manage your symptoms and reduce pain. Most people achieve the best results by combining medication and lifestyle medications.

How to Treat Neuropathy and Reverse Damage

Again, the best way to treat nerve pain is by addressing the underlying cause. Here are some of the ways that you can best manage your symptoms.

  • Medication. Your doctor might prescribe medication to relieve nerve pain or treat the condition causing your symptoms. Medication typically works best when combined with other treatments.
  • Physical therapy. Some people respond well to physical therapy, as it can help build strength and relieve aches and pains associated with nerve damage.
  • Dietary changes. Working with a dietician can also be helpful, especially if you have trouble with nutritional imbalances or high blood sugar.
